“Melting Pottery” is the first project I did in this semester and I did a small series which include two potteries. The first pottery is reddish-brown color with silver and the second pottery is blueish-brown with silver dripping. Both of them are all formed by few different shape of cups and plates.
This project is made of clay. I have tried few different methods such as pinch, slab and coil for this project in order to finish it faster. For the tool, I used needle tool, steel scraper, wood potters rib, wood modeling tool and sponge. The idea of this project in inspired by the other sculpture work that I have made. I made a connection between them. The idea of that sculpture is about greed, because humans tend to believe that we will never have enough. “Melting Pottery” is about when you desire more than you can achieve, overflow tends to happen, and you break down. I used different forms of pottery to represent different emotional life that we lived in. I added liquid dripping down the sculpture to show that everything is melting when there is too much pressure. As an artist, I tried to develop and visualize my art with greater messages that I wished to convey. Experiencing multiple cultures and media has shaped me into a stronger artist as I develop my own style and “Melting Pottery” is one of the best representative of my goal as an artist. This project have not making my message too direct and since it’s in a abstract form, different audiences will see different message and form due to their own experience. From this project, I have learned that different shape of cups and plate can fits in different methods of making it. For example, big and wide plate will fits in slab method, small cups will be made really fast will pinch pot method and big bowl can be made by the combination of pinch and coil methods. Francis Bacon have mentioned, "The job of the artist is to always deepen the mystery". Just as “Melting Pottery”, message doesn’t need to be send directly. Instead, audience need to understand the concept based on their own experience since everyone will have different understand. This project is a really fun experiencing that strengthen my will of majoring sculpture in the future.
